Write an insightful, accurate analysis that relates to either William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily,” Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use,” or O’ Brien’s “The Things They Carried.” Choose one of the following three topics:
1.Analyze three or four symbols in the story. What do they symbolize and what effect do the symbols have on the story as a whole? How do the symbols contribute to the theme of the story?
2. Authors often use characters to develop their themes by showing their reactions to and participation in the events that make up the plot. In an essay, analyze how the character development (the characters moving through the plot) illustrates the theme.
3.  The setting is important in these stories and is often overlooked in literary analysis. In an essay, explore the role that setting has in shaping the characters and the plot, thus contributing to the theme.
