Unit 1 Challenge – Essential Question: According to the unit, why does the American master narrative limit the American identity?
Answer/Restate (Topic Sentence): Restate the question in a form of a declarative statement. It should look like this: According to the unit, the American master narrative limits the American identity.
Explain (YOUR LOGIC/Thesis):
Look back at your answer.
Pretend you are sitting with your friends and you need to explain what you just stated in your answer. Ask yourself: “How did you come up with this explanation?” AND “How did the unit inspire me to come up with this answer?”
This should take 4 to 6 sentences. You have already started this in your unit 1 Discussion. You should read my feedback! Remember to not use specific examples YET. Stay focussed on your explanation! ONLY USE the unit themes, language, and concepts in your explanation.
Focus on the UNIT. Demonstrate that you KNOW the language of the unit! The unit language has been reviewed in our unit. SO make sure to USE LANGUAGE from the unit. You are explaining the topic sentence. DO NOT introduce new ideas or OUTSIDE information. (Do not use anecdotal or previous information. Pretend you ONLY HAVE the unit information.)
Address the question by ONLY using the unit. Be intentional. Enable the reader to understand that the unit readings, videos, and lectures are your sources of inspiration. Bold your unit language.
Do not use us, our, we, I, my. Remember… it’s about the unit.
Support:
Use 3 SPECIFIC examples and illustrations and/or cite SPECIFIC data (facts, statistics, evidence, details, and authors) that supports your explanation/logic from unit 1! This is the section of your assessment in which you are specifically applying the arguments presented by the course content that connect to your explanation.
Your support MUST stay focussed to your explanation. Sources = chapters, articles, and films from the unit. No outside sources are to be used.
Comment:
Examine the argument presented by the source in relation to your explanation.
Evaluate causes and reasons of the author’s argument in relation to your explanation.
Examine effects and consequences of the author’s argument to your explanation.
How does the support you used connect with your explanation.
What does the support you used mean in relation to your explanation.
Remember, you are to comment on all 3 sources used. Stay focussed on your support and HOW it’s aligned with the unit! USE the course themes in your Comment. Align with the unit.
Bold any use of the unit language.
When you re-read your overall answer, it should all be connected – coherent.
BE COHERENT!
Coherence is achieved when sentences and ideas are connected and flow together smoothly.
An answer without coherence can inhibit a reader’s ability to understand your logic of the answer.
Coherence allows the reader to move easily throughout the answer from one idea to the next, from one sentence to the next, and from one element in the AESC method to the next element.
