TASK: You are required to write a 600-750 word response that demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of the issues in the novel that you studied this semester, as well as the themes and topics explored in Unit 1. You are to develop a strongly supported argument about one of the topics listed below:
How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, by Mohsin Hamid:
Choose one of the following topics (Be sure to read both of them before making your selection):
Option 1: Technology In unit 1 we discussed the positive and negative effects that advanced technology has in our lives. The novel frequently reflects on the development of modern technology, and often uses technological metaphors and information to convey meaning or facts about the events of the story. Does the novel represent technology positively or negatively? Does the emergence of digital communications help the characters achieve success and happiness? Is there a dark side to technology? Develop an argument about the role of technology in the novel. Option 2: Private Spaces The novel often describes private spaces (like offices, apartments, and houses) in great detail. Following the protagonist, and other characters, over many years, we see them in some places that are large and luxurious, and in others that are cramped and dirty. How do private spaces reflect the characters’s personalities? How do they influence their experiences? Develop an argument about the importance of these physical settings in the novel.
Remember to explore these questions through an analysis of pertinent examples/details from the novel and ideas/concepts explored in Unit 1 of the course. You must quote from the novel at least 6 times. Use these questions as prompts for your own thinking. You may choose to answer them directly, but they can also prompt a creative observation that you use to develop your argument. Your goal is to focus on one claim about the novel, not to address every theme, character, event, or chapter, while not confining your analysis to only one or two chapters.
