PART 1
Personality Theorists are in the unique position of studying the psychological mechanisms of action within a person—a person’s “operating system”. They have the monumental task of synthesizing the best information from diverse fields throughout psychology (and outside of the field) into a coherent, holistic configuration. In the course of their work, personality theorists address fundamental issues of human nature and individual differences. It has been suggested that a theorist’s answers to the questions below will define their understanding of human nature. Below, I provided links to information that might help you understand the following questions better. Feel free to use the information (be sure to cite and reference accordingly, per APA formatting rules) or you may use your own research…
Free will or determinism? Do we have a conscious awareness and control of ourselves? Are we free to choose, to be masters of our fate, or are we heavily subject to biological factors, unconscious forces, or external stimuli?
Nature or nurture? Is our personality determined primarily by the abilities, temperaments, or predispositions we inherit, or are we shaped more strongly by the environments in which we live?
Past, present, or future? Is personality development basically complete in early childhood? Or is personality independent of the past, capable of being influenced by events and experiences in the present and even by future aspirations and goals?
Uniqueness or universality? Is the personality of each individual unique, or are there broad personality patterns that fit large numbers of persons?
Equilibrium or growth? Are we primarily tension-reducing, pleasure-seeking animals or are we motivated primarily by the need to grow, to reach our full potential, to reach for ever-higher levels of self-expression and development?
Optimism or pessimism? Are human beings basically good or evil? Are we kind and compassionate, or cruel and merciless?
→ For PART 1 of this discussion: Learners are instructed to compose a meaningful, but relatively brief essay that broadly addresses the above questions, demonstrating creative and advance critical thought (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation). By “broadly” I mean that you don’t have to answer each question in a distinct fashion. Rather, I want you to discuss YOUR “theory of personality” that synthesizes and evaluates each of the above questions. Above, I provided links to information that might help you understand the aforementioned questions better. Feel free to use the information (be sure to cite and reference accordingly, per APA formatting rules) or you may use your own research.
You are required to meaningfully incorporate Chapter 10 of the required textbook, and you are strongly encouraged to utilize credible-outside-the-textbook sources to bolster your essay.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There may be a temptation to proselytize or sermonize this discussion. DO NOT do so! I am looking for scholarly thought derived from scientific research and analysis.
PART 2
Prejudice is ubiquitous—meaning…it is everywhere!
→ For PART 2 of this discussion: Learners are instructed to compose a meaningful, but brief essay that identifies and discusses ONE (1) specific current/modern issue (social, political, religious, domestic, or foreign or some combination) that they believe BEST illustrates many of the concepts and principles of prejudice discussed in Chapter 11 of the required textbook. Fully explain why you identified this specific issue and how it illustrates prejudice and its related ideas. Additionally, discuss how the prejudice exemplified by the issue your chose can best be alleviated or solved for the better. I am looking for evidence of advanced critical thinking (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation).
You are REQUIRED to meaningfully incorporate Chapter 11 of the required textbook and REQUIRED to utilize at least one (1) credible-outside-the-textbook source to bolster your discussion.

create to demonstrate understanding of psychological concepts

INSTRUCTIONS
The exam consists of five short essay prompts. Each prompt is worth 20% of the FINAL grade.
PROMPTS AND PICTURES OF TEXTBOOK PAGES NEEDED ARE ATTACHED, ALONG WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW
Read each prompt before writing your responses. Each prompt relates to a fictional character you will create to demonstrate understanding of psychological concepts explored in chapters 8, 9, 10, 12, and 13.
You must use the same character for each prompt to demonstrate dynamic understanding of the chapter topics. Read each prompt before writing your responses.
Write a paragraph or two per prompt. You may use your book, google, and/or YouTube to help you better understand concepts and real-world examples; use your imagination, be creative, and have fun with it.
Submit a PDF document with your answers no later than July, 5 2021 at 9:00 p.m. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Label your answers with the correct prompt number. You do not have to submit your answers using a specific format nor include the prompts with your answers.
Include all five responses in your submission for full credit. Partial credit may or may not be awarded for incomplete answers.
PROMPTS
1
Review the personality disorders discussed on pages 326 and 327 of the text at the end of chapter 12: Psychological Disorders. Using your imagination, create a fictional character who has one of the personality disorders discussed in chapter 12.
Identify and define the personality disorder you chose.
Write a paragraph describing what your character’s life is like living with the disorder. Use character examples to demonstrate understanding of the personality disorder and associated behaviors.
2
Two parts:
Define a vocabulary word or topic in Chapter 9: The Voyage Through the Lifespan related to one of the four major life stages: infancy, childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.
Write a paragraph using examples describing a time in your character’s life they experienced something associated with the topic you chose. Your character examples may be based in the past, present, or future.
3
Two parts:
Name and describe each level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs discussed in Chapter 8: Motivation and Emotion.
Describe what your character does to meet (or not meet) their needs at each level of Maslow’s Hierarchy. If any of their needs are not being met, what is inhibiting your character from getting their needs met / what do they need in order to meet their needs at each level?
4
Review the big five traits / five-factor model discussed on pages 269 and 270 in Chapter 10: Personality Theory and Measurement. Mental health experts use this model to understand a client’s personality and assess abnormal behavior for clinical purposes. Where do you think your character falls on each of the five scales? Describe example behaviors your character might demonstrate as it relates to the personality disorder and your interpretation of each scale (it is important to note that being high or low on any of the scales does not mean someone has a disorder nor does it mean being high is better than being low and vice versa):
5
Identify and describe a particular mental health issue your fictional character struggles with. How would a counselor or social worker work with your character? Choose a counseling theory from Chapter 13: Methods of Therapy, or from your APA paper, and write a paragraph describing counseling theory-specific techniques the counselor might use to help your character.

Research the history and traditions of a culture that is of special interest to you.

In this paper you will create a character and a sort of case study. This is not a research paper about a culture nor is it a story about an actual person. You are creating a character who will allow you to apply the concepts we have studied in this course.
Research the history and traditions of a culture that is of special interest to you. You should research the arts, musical traditions, literature, significant historical events, and religions of your chosen culture.
Armed with this background, create a portfolio of an invented person from that culture. The result will be a sort of case study of this created person.
Decide on the age, gender, socioeconomic class, family situation, and community role of the individual, as well as a personal crisis the individual has involving culture. It is not to just be a crisis. It must involve some cultural component.
Write up the “case study” which is the story of your character. Include a key historical event that has some influence on the character’s life. This means some event in history (e.g. the American Revolution) that either directly affected your character or affected their family and their personal history in some way.
Analyze how this historical event affected the character’s psychological development. Remember that you are focusing on the character’s development, not the historical event. Remember that this is a psychology course and so the focus should be on those concepts and aspects of the character’s life. Be sure to use specific concepts from the course readings and apply them to your character.
You must use at least 4 peer-reviewed journal articles. Those should be integrated into the text, not just appear in the reference page.
