Assignment 1: A Legal and Ethical Dilemma

Assignment 1: A Legal and Ethical Dilemma

Due Week 3 and worth 250 points

Deciding to place a loved one into a long-term care facility can be extremely difficult. Even more difficult is the thought of your loved one’s rights being violated while in long-term care. Patient healthcare rights are not as clearly defined as one would expect, and there are long-term care and other healthcare facilities that create their own sets of patient rights. However, there are also certain indisputable rights afforded to patients across the board.

Read the case study titled “A Legal and Ethical Dilemma”, located on pages 463-465 of your text. Next, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research information on a patient’s right to die.

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you: 1.Describe the legal and ethical dilemma discussed in the case study. Analyze the key ways in which a patient’s right to die relates to this specific case. 2.From your research, specify the potential repercussions for failure to comply with the wishes of a patient who has requested to withhold a life-sustaining procedure. Next, take a position on whether the patient’s right to die or the patient’s right to be protected from harm should take precedence in this case. Provide a rationale for your position. 3.Imagine that you are a part of the ethics committee investigating this case. Determine the main facts pertaining to the issue that the committee should consider. Suggest one (1) step that the facility should take next in order to resolve the dilemma. Provide a rationale for your response. 4.Use at least three (3) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other similar websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements: •Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. •Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are: •Identify the factors that have led to the current realities of long-term care in the United States. •Assess the various stakeholder groups of long-term care along with the nature of the relationship(s). •Evaluate the impact of litigation on long-term care providers and practices. •Use technology and information resources to research issues in long-term care management. •Write clearly and concisely about long-term care management using proper writing mechanics.

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the “Personal Epistemology in Education”

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the “Personal Epistemology in Education” article in your text (p. 52), the Bendixen and Rule (2004) and Hofer (2006) articles in the Ashford University Library, and watch the What is Epistemology? Introduction to the Word and the Concept (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. video required for this week.

As suggested in the required articles and video for this assignment, the definition of what a personal epistemology is has been debated. However, developing a personal learning epistemology is important because it is foundational to how we think. Without a multifaceted understanding of how we obtain knowledge, how we rely on our intelligences, and how we expand ideas in our minds, we have no intelligible path for our beliefs. A rigorous learning epistemology is essential to comprehensive reasoning and thinking.

PSY620-W1-Assignment image

Based on your current and newly developed knowledge as well as the required resources for this assignment, apply basic research methods to align the content of the information in the required course resources this week with your personally constructed learning epistemology. Apply skeptical inquiry to develop your personal epistemological beliefs through reflection on the questions below. Be aware that these questions are not the only considerations that might be included, and they should not be used verbatim; rather, they can serve as guides as you begin the process of creating your personal epistemology.

What can we know? How can we know it? What do/should individuals need to learn, and why? What purpose(s) should education serve? How do you believe persons acquire knowledge best? What image of society and the kinds of adults that populate it seems to correspond with your vision of knowing/learning? What do you believe about the way students learn and why they may (or may not) want to learn? Why do we know some things but not others? How do we acquire knowledge? Is knowledge possible? Can knowledge be certain? How can we differentiate truth from falsehood? Why do we believe certain claims and not others? According to Plato, knowledge is a subset of that which is both true and believed. Do you agree or disagree? After developing basic answers to the questions above and considering the impact of understanding how one’s own conscience awareness of knowledge and learning may affect individual development and beliefs manifestations, research a minimum of five peer-reviewed articles in the Ashford University Library that can be used as support sources for your personal learning epistemology. Your learning epistemology must include six to seven key points with supporting rationales regarding your beliefs on learning and knowing.

Apply professional standards to your explanation regarding how knowledge is developed by providing references for any theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and/or empirical findings you include in your epistemology. Additionally, your personal epistemology should be an authentic and truthful explanation about your current beliefs about learning and knowing, as supported by your research, and not merely reflective of what you think your instructor or peers want to hear.

The paper should not include any elaborate quotes; it should be scholarly in nature with citations throughout. It is recommended that you submit your paper to both Writing Reviser and Turnitin prior to submission for grading. Please note that you will include a revised draft of this epistemology, based on instructor feedback as well as your own knowledge development during this course, as part of your Learning and Cognition Handbook.

The paper:

How Does This Relate to Me? Prior to beginning this journal entry, review the “Cognition: Overview and Recent Trends” (pp. 3-8), “Neuroscience Bases of Learning” (pp. 9-15), and “Learning in a Cross-Cultural Perspective” (pp. 16-22) articles in your text, and read the American Educational Research Association’s Code of Ethics (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. It is important for you to have already completed your initial post in the “Learning and Cognition Perspectives” discussion before you compose this journal entry. Each week’s journal entry will include four parts. Each part does not need to be lengthy, but should demonstrate your understanding of the course content addressed within the week.

Part 1: Learning acquisition and development is a key area in the study of learning and cognition. Each week, you will include vocabulary from your readings in your journal that was unfamiliar to you or might be unfamiliar to your peers. Identify three to five words from this week’s content and research each word in the context of learning and cognition. Explain, in your own words, what each word means and how it is used in the context of learning and cognition.

Part 2: Based on this week’s discourse and content, access the Ashford University Library and research one peer-reviewed article pertaining to social processing that was published within the last 10 years. Provide a summary explanation of the findings on social processing in the context of your article. What implications should scholars consider based on this information? Support your explanation utilizing your course sources and your researched article.

Part 3: Consider the events from the past week of your life. Did you or someone you know experience anything that supports your conclusions about the effects of emotions and social learning on behaviors? Describe one personal real-life example of an occurrence that supports the implications of social learning on our behaviors and beliefs. As you share this information, consider and apply the professional standards found in “12.06 Anonymity of Sources”found in the AERA Code of Ethics (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

What is the possibility for bias on your part, and how can it be avoided (or should it be)? In what ways can you address your personal biases when explaining observations to be ethical in reporting of the information? How important is this process to the maintenance of professional standards?

Each journal entry should be 400 to 700 words in length and should establish your understanding of the content, apply appropriate methods of ethical practices, and exhibit appropriate scaffolding of personal experience to the week’s

Assignment 1: Creating and Communicating a Security Strategy First Draft

Assignment 1: Creating and Communicating a Security Strategy First Draft Due Week 4 Final Due Week 6, worth 80 points As an IT professional, you’ll often be required to communicate policies, standards, and practices in the workplace. For this assignment, you’ll practice this important task by taking on the role of an IT professional charged with creating a memo to communicate your company’s new security strategy. The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are: • Analyze the importance of network architecture to security operations. • Apply information security standards to real-world implementation. • Communicate how problem-solving concepts are applied in a business environment. • Use information resources to research issues in information systems security. • Write clearly about network security topics using proper writing mechanics and business formats. Preparation 1. Review the essential elements of a security strategy A successful IT administration strategy requires the continuous enforcement of policies, standards, and practices (procedures) within the organization. Review these elements to see how they compare: Policy The general statements that direct the organization’s internal and external communication and goals. Standards Describe the requirements of a given activity related to the policy. They are more detailed and specific than policies. In effect, standards are rules that evaluate the quality of the activity. For example, standards define the structure of the password and the numbers, letters, and special characters that must be used in order to create a password. Practices The written instructions that describe a series of steps to be followed during the performance of a given activity. Practices must support and enhance the work environment. Also referred to as procedures. 2. Describe the business environment You are the IT professional in charge of security for a company that has recently opened within a shopping mall. Describe the current IT environment at this business. You can draw details from a company you work for now or for which you have worked in the past. You’ll need to get creative and identify the details about this business that will influence the policies you’ll create. For example, does the company allow cell phone email apps? Does the company allow web mail? If so, how will this affect the mobile computing policy? Describe all the details about this business environment that will be necessary to support your strategy. Page 2 of 6 3. Research sample policies Familiarize yourself with various templates and sample policies used in the IT field. Do not just copy another company’s security policy, but rather learn from the best practices of other companies and apply them to yours. Use these resources to help structure your policies: ● Information Security Policy Templates ● Sample Data Security Policies ● Additional Examples and Tips Instructions With the description of the business environment (the fictional company that has opened in a shopping mall) in mind and your policy review and research complete, create a new security strategy in the format of a company memo (no less than three to five pages) in which you do the following: 1. Describe the business environment and identify the risk and reasoning Provide a brief description of all the important areas of the business environment that you’ve discovered in your research. Be sure to identify the reasons that prompted the need to create a security policy. 2. Assemble a security policy Assemble a security policy or policies for this business. Using the memo outline as a guide, collect industry-specific and quality best practices. In your own words, formulate your fictional company’s security policy or policies. You may use online resources, the Strayer Library, or other industry-related resources such as the National Security Agency (NSA) and Network World. In a few brief sentences, provide specific information on how your policy will support the business’ goal. 3. Develop standards Develop the standards that will describe the requirements of a given activity related to the policy. Standards are the in-depth details of the security policy or policies for a business. 4. Develop practices Develop the practices that will be used to ensure the business enforces what is stated in the security policy or policies and standards. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements: • This course is designed to prepare you for a career in IT. While most Strayer University courses require APA (essay) format, this course focuses on writing in a business format. Review this resource to learn more about the important features of business writing: The One Unbreakable Rule in Business Writing. ● You may use the provided memo outline as a guide for this assignment, or you may use your own. Get creative and be original! (You should not just copy a memo from another source.) Adapt the strategy you create to your “company” specifically. In the workplace, it will be important to use company standard documents for this type of communication. ● Do not cut and paste someone else’s strategy. Plagiarism detection software will be used to

Due October 11 at 11:59 PM Assignment 3: Preparing for the Informational Interview

Due October 11 at 11:59 PM Assignment 3: Preparing for the Informational Interview

An informational interview is a recommended tool for exploring career options. This assignment is designed to prepare you for an informational interview of a professional in the field of psychology. You will conduct this informational interview during Module 2. Here, in Module 1, you will create a script, design a list of questions, and identify the person you hope to interview. You also need to schedule the interview.

In M3 Assignment 2 LASA 1, you will submit a written account of the informational interview you conducted with the psychology professional.

You will ask the interviewee to describe the educational and training steps (the career paths) he or she took to reach the current position. You will also ask the interviewee to describe, in some detail, the job responsibilities associated with the position. The interview must be at least thirty minutes long. Ideally, it should be conducted in person. If that is not feasible, a phone interview is adequate.

For this assignment, do the following:

Begin to prepare for this informational interview by identifying the professional you plan to interview. Ideally, the professional should be engaged in a career that you hope to pursue. (You may want to identify a second candidate in case your initial choice is unable to complete the interview with you.) This professional may work in your local area, but that is not necessary. If you cannot identify a professional easily, ask your friends and family if they know anyone who works in the field of psychology. You may also want to phone your local community mental health center or social services agency to ask for names and contact information of potential professionals you could interview. Contact your facilitator for guidance if you have difficulty in identifying someone. Provide the following identifying information about the individual you have selected: The name The job title (licensed psychologist, social worker, or case manager) The level of education (a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree) A description of job responsibilities or day-to-day tasks The type of license, if applicable The state of residence and practice The e-mail address or phone number

Develop a list of at least fifteen questions to ask in your informational interview. Research possible questions to include using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet. Click here to download a copy of the “Job Resources” document and save it to your computer. Refer to the “Job Resources” document to do an Internet search using the search terms “informational interview questions” in order to find suggested questions. Be sure to put them into your own words for the purpose of this assignment and to give credit to your source by using in-text citations and a reference list in APA format. Ask the interviewee about his or her work, academic preparation, and advice. In addition, include the interviewee’s answers to questions on the following topics: The experience, skills, and knowledge necessary for success in a career in psychology or in graduate school Relevant professional organizations His or her views on professional ethics and academic integrity The role of psychological research in his or her work His or her greatest challenges and rewards His or her reasons for choosing the field

Develop a script (word-for-word written statement) that you will use during the warm-up (meet-and-greet) portion of the interview. What will you say to the interviewee when you meet him or her? What will you do? For example, will you shake the person’s hand and introduce yourself? Include small talk of a professional nature that will serve as an introduction and explanation of the purpose of the interview. Demonstrate in your script your ability to interact professionally and effectively in a professional environment. This assignment is preparatory work for the interview to be conducted later in this course. Do not conduct the interview for this assignment. Submission Details:

Write a 1–2-page paper in Microsoft Word format. Apply APA standards to cite sources. Use the following file-naming convention: M1_A3_Lastname_Firstname.doc. By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.
