Historical Evidence Paper Due 2/19 Choose a historical claim that is currently supported. This can be something which the textbook says, something that I have said, or something that you have heard somewhere else, e.g. (Latin for for example) : The patron-client relationship supported many poor Romans while elevating the status of the patron. Julius Caesar had a relationship with Cleopatra Roman weddings involved a procession to retrieve the bride from her parents’ house and escort her to the groom’s house. In a seven page paper, describe and explain the evidence that modern scholars use to support the claim which you have chosen. Make sure you spend a considerable amount of your paper explaining why your evidence is significant. For instance, if you find some poetry from the first century B.C. describing a bridal procession, explain why this text depicts a typical custom rather than an exceptional one. If a historian from the third century A.D. talks about how a second century B.C. aristocrat treated his clients well, why do modern historians think that that ancient historian gave a reliable account of something that happened four centuries earlier? Evidence never speaks for itself. That is why giving evidence requires a paper and not just a list! N.B.: Do not spend too much time describing the historical claim. For instance, I don’t want your paper to be a description of Caesar’s relationship with Cleopatra. I already know more about it than I want to know! What I don’t know is where modern historians get their evidence about it. That’s what I want you to tell me. This will require a little bit of writing in report mode, but move on as soon as possible to laying out the evidence. Make sure that your claim is specific and concrete enough that you can explain the supporting evidence within seven pages!
