I aim to examine Speech-Language Pathologists’ perspectives on the challenges of collaboration with general education teachers for the support of students who have communication disorders. I would like to see how much years of experience in the field impacts the perspectives and the perceived success of collaboration.
Variable Name 1: Years of Experience.
The first variable I will measure is Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) years of experience working in the school system. This will be measured by a Likert Scale in the following brackets: 0-3 years, 4-7 years, 8-11 years, 12-15 years, and 16+ years
Variable Name 2: How teachers rate the importance of compatible personalities for the success of collaboration.
The second variable will also be measured by the Likert Scale in the format of ‘little support’ increasing to ‘great support’ ranging by numbers 1-5 to choose from. This variable will measure how important each personality, knowledge, and background can be when working cohesively.
I would like to measure the relationship between the variables of Speech-Language Pathologists years of experience and how important compatible personalities are for the success of collaboration. I would like to determine if there is some kind of a consistent relationship based on how much experience an SLP has to how easy or hard it is to work with other professionals. I would like to determine if clashing personalities will hinder collaboration.
I would like to measure the relationship between an SLPs years of experience and the importance of compatible personalities to determine if there are areas that hinder or help successful collaboration in the education setting. It is important to collaborate for the students but making these determinations will help school districts and administration to better supports the teachers and coworkers to gain knowledge as to what makes collaboration successful.
I believe that the outcome will be that the SLPs rate the importance of collaboration with general education teachers to be very necessary and highly important. As SLPs and teachers gain years of experience they will begin to appreciate the perspectives, experiences, knowledge, and opinions of other professionals with the common goal of helping the student succeed.
If I were to determine what the direction and strength of the relationship would be between the two variables I would determine this to be positive. Anytime there is a relationship between two or more individuals, whether this be a working relationship or personal relationship, typically have a higher success rate when the individuals have compatible personalities such a similar age, similar status, and sense of humor. All of these areas will have a positive impact when working cohesively. Additionally, when individuals have fewer years of experience they may not have learned all of the skills to working collaboratively in a professional environment as those with more years of experience.
