“Mr. Hernández is a quiet man who tends to demonstrate his feelings through hard, methodical work on his gardening route. Because his English is limited, he is accustomed to communicating in Spanish with his family and friends. He does, however, converse in English with his customers in order to maintain his business. In front of a helping professional, such as a social worker, Mr. Hernández is reserved and shy. He speaks only when he needs to answer the worker’s questions and does not initiate conversation. Communications barriers exist.” (Lum, 1992)
Describe how would you apply what you have learned about cultural competence to develop a plan to engage Mr. Hernández? What questions would you ask in an interview that show you are culturally competent?
