. Briefly explain the German voting system on the federal level and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of proportional representation using the German example.

Please answer ONE question from EACH section. The xam should consist of three separate short essays. Each of your answers should have between 500 and 800 words. Do not write more than 2500 words total. You do not need to consult any outside sources, but you should very much draw on the course readings and lectures in designing your answers. Make sure to give specific exampes rather than vague and general statements. Even though this is not a formal paper, your writing still matters. Write well-organized essays that adhere to the rules of grammar and orthography and that present a well-crafter argument with specificevidence to support it. Please include references (end or footnotes) if you cite literally or paraphrase sections from the readings (the references to dont countas part of your word count).
Group A:
1. Briefly explain the German voting system on the federal level and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of proportional representation using the German example.
2. What is “Presidentalization”? To which extent does the development of German election campaigns reflect this trend?
3. Describe some important changes to the German party system since unification and discuss how, if at all, recent election results and polls reflect these changes.
Group B:
4. Describe some basic features of the German welfare system and discuss the question whether the system is still sustainable.
5. How, if at all, has the immigration of so-called “guest workers” changed Germany since the 1960s?
6. With regard to different forms of Capitalism, what is the “German Model”? Include a brief discussion of the system of “codetermination” in your answer.
Group C:
7. “The recent rise of the far-right ‘Alternative for Germany’ is less a sign of Germany’s inability to deal with its Nazi past than a sign of normalization — populism in Germany is like populism in other Western countries.” Discuss.
8. Discuss Germany’s role in the European Union today and its role in the history of the process of European intergration since 1945. Is there still a “German question”?
9. Is Germany still a divided country?
