Origin of Self-Determination Theory
Theories are premises to account for data and explanations on how the information make sense based on the data (Rudestam & Newton, 2015). Qualitive methods tends to be linked to a theory of knowledge and focuses on a point of view from those who has have lived an experience (Rudestam & Newton, 2015). Principally, Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a theory of individual motivation (what propels people to act) created by psychologists Richard Ryan and Edward Deci. As studies indicate, the approach emphasizes the psychological levels and aims to illustrate the differences between distinct forms of motivation (Ryan & Deci, 2017, p. 3). The SDT theory also analyzes how social-contextual influences thwart or promote individuals’ survival by satisfying personal primary psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Lastly, SDT ascertains intrinsic and various extrinsic motivation forms and illustrates the relationship between these motivations and situational feedback in multiple domains (Legault, 2017, p. 1). This essay seeks to explore how mental health counselors and social workers apply SDT.
The theoretical foundation for this study will provide a linkage in understanding the health and wellness aspects of clinical mental health professionals working during COVID-19. SDT was introduced as an empirical theory to address personality development, self-regulation, universal psychological needs, life goals and aspirations, energy and vitality, nonconscious processes, relations of culture to motivation, the impact of social environments on motivation, affect, behavior, and well-being (Deci & Ryan, 2008). I chose SDT, because the theory incorporates different facets of support and focus on determining mental health outcomes.
Rationale for the Theoretical Framework
At large, clinical mental health professionals use self-determination theory to examine how social, cultural, and biological conditions hinder or facilitate the inherent individual abilities for psychological growth. Arguably, social workers use self-determination theory to help clients recognize and clarify their innate capacities (Fanning, 2015). Besides, mental counselors and social workers use SDT interventions to promote recovery for adults with pronounced mental issues (Petros & Solomon, 2019). As posited by Akbar (2019), self-determination acts as the central domain in social work career. Besides, through self-determination theory, mental health counselors and social workers promote agency and societal conventions. Although mental health counselors and social workers face immense struggles while trying to help the clients, self-determination theory is used to develop techniques through which the practitioners can help the clients accept mental treatment (Floyd-Pickard, 2006).
